Market Participants Recognise Shanghai Wondertek Software Co., Ltd's (SHSE:603189) Revenues Pushing Shares 28% Higher

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 3 20:33

Shanghai Wondertek Software Co., Ltd (SHSE:603189) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 28% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 26% over that time.

After such a large jump in price, given around half the companies in China's Software industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 5.3x, you may consider Shanghai Wondertek Software as a stock to avoid entirely with its 13.1x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Has Shanghai Wondertek Software Performed Recently?

Shanghai Wondertek Software hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn the corner. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Shanghai Wondertek Software's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Shanghai Wondertek Software?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Shanghai Wondertek Software would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 15%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 17% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the sole analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 149% over the next year. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 33%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why Shanghai Wondertek Software is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

The strong share price surge has lead to Shanghai Wondertek Software's P/S soaring as well. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our look into Shanghai Wondertek Software shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
