Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Yusys Technologies Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:300674) Earnings Despite 25% Price Jump

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 3 20:08

Yusys Technologies Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300674) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 25% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 19% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, it's still not a stretch to say that Yusys Technologies' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 30.4x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in China, where the median P/E ratio is around 30x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Yusys Technologies has been doing quite well of late. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to deteriorate like the rest, which has kept the P/E from rising. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like Yusys Technologies' to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 29% last year. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 34% drop in EPS in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 31% per year as estimated by the ten analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 22% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.

In light of this, it's curious that Yusys Technologies' P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Yusys Technologies' P/E

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Yusys Technologies' P/E is also back up to the market median. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Our examination of Yusys Technologies' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
