There's No Escaping PTC Therapeutics, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PTCT) Muted Revenues Despite A 27% Share Price Rise

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 3 09:35

PTC Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:PTCT) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 27% share price jump in the last month. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 31% in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, PTC Therapeutics' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.6x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the wider Biotechs industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 15.7x and even P/S above 75x are quite common. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does PTC Therapeutics' Recent Performance Look Like?

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, PTC Therapeutics has been relatively sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like PTC Therapeutics' to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 34% gain to the company's top line. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 146% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 8.2% each year as estimated by the twelve analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the broader industry is forecast to expand by 268% per annum, which paints a poor picture.

With this information, we are not surprised that PTC Therapeutics is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.

The Final Word

Even after such a strong price move, PTC Therapeutics' P/S still trails the rest of the industry. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of PTC Therapeutics' analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking revenue is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
