Luokung Technology Corp.'s (NASDAQ:LKCO) Shares Leap 63% Yet They're Still Not Telling The Full Story

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 29 06:58

Luokung Technology Corp. (NASDAQ:LKCO) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 63% gain and recovering from prior weakness. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 82% share price drop in the last twelve months.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Luokung Technology may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.4x, considering almost half of all companies in the Interactive Media and Services industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.8x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Has Luokung Technology Performed Recently?

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Luokung Technology over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader industry in the near future. Those who are bullish on Luokung Technology will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

How Is Luokung Technology's Revenue Growth Trending?

Luokung Technology's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 78%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 82% overall rise in revenue, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 14%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

In light of this, it's peculiar that Luokung Technology's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What Does Luokung Technology's P/S Mean For Investors?

Luokung Technology's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We're very surprised to see Luokung Technology currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see robust revenue growth that outpaces the industry, we presume that there are notable underlying risks to the company's future performance, which is exerting downward pressure on the P/S ratio. While recent revenue trends over the past medium-term suggest that the risk of a price decline is low, investors appear to perceive a likelihood of revenue fluctuations in the future.

You should always think about risks. Case in point, we've spotted 4 warning signs for Luokung Technology you should be aware of, and 2 of them are a bit concerning.
