Insiders At Alkami Technology Sold US$4.9m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 28 06:46

The fact that multiple Alkami Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALKT) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Alkami Technology Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chief Strategy & Product Officer, Stephen Bohanon, sold US$1.5m worth of shares at a price of US$22.75 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$25.71, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. This single sale was just 7.8% of Stephen Bohanon's stake.

Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Alkami Technology insiders own about US$365m worth of shares (which is 15% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
