Samsung Electronics Announces Expansion of Cooperation with Arm

Samsung Electronics, the world's largest manufacturer of memory chips, said on Wednesday that it will expand cooperation with Arm, a British chip design company under the SoftBank Group, to enhance the competitiveness of its foundry business.

Samsung Electronics said that as part of the partnership, its foundry division will work with Arm to optimize design assets for Arm's next-generation system-on-chip (SoC) or Samsung's latest Gate-All-Around (GAA) process technology.

This will help Samsung Electronics' fabless customers increase their access to the most advanced GAA processes and minimize the time and cost of next-generation product development.

GAA technology is the next generation of key semiconductor technology to overcome the decline in transistor performance due to process miniaturization and improve data processing speed and power efficiency. Samsung Electronics was the first in the world to launch a 3-nanometer GAA in 2022.

In addition, the two companies are also planning to redevelop 2nm GAA for next-generation data center and infrastructure custom chips, as well as pioneering AI chip solutions that will completely transform the future generative AI mobile computing market.

Samsung Electronics said that the latest cooperation is based on cooperation with millions of devices equipped with the intellectual property rights of Arm CPUs over many years, and these devices use various process nodes provided by Samsung's foundry business.

Kye Jong-wook, head of foundry design platform development at Samsung Electronics, said, “As we enter the generative AI era, we are excited to expand our collaboration with Arm to launch the next generation of Cortex-X CPUs to enable our joint customers to create innovative products.”
