Angi Inc. (NASDAQ:ANGI) Shares Fly 27% But Investors Aren't Buying For Growth

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 15 05:06

Angi Inc. (NASDAQ:ANGI) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 4.3% isn't as impressive.

Even after such a large jump in price, Angi may still be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x, considering almost half of all companies in the Interactive Media and Services industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 1.7x and even P/S higher than 4x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How Has Angi Performed Recently?

While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Angi's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

How Is Angi's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Angi's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 28%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 7.4% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 3.1% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 12% each year, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Angi's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.

The Key Takeaway

Angi's stock price has surged recently, but its but its P/S still remains modest. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

As expected, our analysis of Angi's analyst forecasts confirms that the company's underwhelming revenue outlook is a major contributor to its low P/S. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
