While Shareholders of Wuxi Lead Intelligent EquipmentLTD (SZSE:300450) Are in the Red Over the Last Three Years, Underlying Earnings Have Actually Grown

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 8 19:14

If you love investing in stocks you're bound to buy some losers. But the last three years have been particularly tough on longer term Wuxi Lead Intelligent Equipment CO.,LTD. (SZSE:300450) shareholders. Sadly for them, the share price is down 66% in that time. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 55% in the last year. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 24% in the last 90 days. Of course, this share price action may well have been influenced by the 16% decline in the broader market, throughout the period.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, Wuxi Lead Intelligent EquipmentLTD actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 52% per year. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 37% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. It's probably worth investigating Wuxi Lead Intelligent EquipmentLTD further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 23% in the twelve months, Wuxi Lead Intelligent EquipmentLTD shareholders did even worse, losing 55% (even including dividends). Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 1.3% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Wuxi Lead Intelligent EquipmentLTD (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.
