As StoneCo (NASDAQ:STNE) Increases 4.2% This Past Week, Investors May Now Be Noticing the Company's Three-year Earnings Growth

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 7 10:15

StoneCo Ltd. (NASDAQ:STNE) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 74% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been stomach churning. To wit, the share price sky-dived 80% in that time. So it's about time shareholders saw some gains. The thing to think about is whether the business has really turned around.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, StoneCo moved from a loss to profitability. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So given the share price is down it's worth checking some other metrics too.

We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 47% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching StoneCo more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that StoneCo shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 77% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 3% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. Before forming an opinion on StoneCo you might want to consider these 3 valuation metrics.
