The CFRA’s Dividend Aristocrats is an annual list of stocks from the S&P 500 (SP500) universe that have at least 25 years of consecutive dividend increases. These stocks have four-star and five-star ratings from CFRA analysts.
Analyst Raymond Jarvis wrote that from January 1926 through December 2023, the annualized total return for the S&P 500 was 10.37% per year, with a dividend component that comprises about 38.08% of the return.
Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst for S&P Dow Jones Indices, said that “for 2024 dividends, the initial projection is positive, but minimal, due to the uncertainty of the economy, the timing of interest rates cuts, and the changing patterns of dividends.”
He also noted that for the entirety of 2023, the U.S. common dividend increases were $65.1B, which was down 21.1% from 2022.
