Insiders were net sellers of Cabot Corporation's (NYSE:CBT ) stock during the past year. That is, insiders sold more stock than they bought.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Cabot

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Executive VP and President of Reinforcement Materials Segment & Americas Region, Hobart Kalkstein, sold US$833k worth of shares at a price of US$83.00 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$72.55. So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price. Hobart Kalkstein was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Cabot insiders own 1.0% of the company, worth about US$42m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
