Pulling Back 11% This Week, Ares Commercial Real Estate's NYSE:ACRE) Five-year Decline in Earnings May Be Coming Into Investors Focus

For many, the main point of investing is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But the main game is to find enough winners to more than offset the losers So we wouldn't blame long term Ares Commercial Real Estate Corporation (NYSE:ACRE) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 35% over a half decade. The last week also saw the share price slip down another 11%.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the five years over which the share price declined, Ares Commercial Real Estate's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 45% each year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 8% compound annual share price fall. The relatively muted share price reaction might be because the market expects the business to turn around. With a P/E ratio of 145.08, it's fair to say the market sees a brighter future for the business.

As it happens, Ares Commercial Real Estate's TSR for the last 5 years was 16%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 19% in the last year, Ares Commercial Real Estate shareholders lost 15% (even including dividends). Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 3% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering.
