Not Many Are Piling Into Joy Kie Corporation Limited (SZSE:300994) Stock Yet As It Plummets 27%

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 31 19:09

The Joy Kie Corporation Limited (SZSE:300994) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 27%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 41% in that time.

After such a large drop in price, Joy Kie may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 22.9x, since almost half of all companies in China have P/E ratios greater than 30x and even P/E's higher than 54x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, Joy Kie has been very sluggish. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Joy Kie's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 49% decrease to the company's bottom line. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 39% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 63% during the coming year according to the four analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 42%, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we find it odd that Joy Kie is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On Joy Kie's P/E

Joy Kie's P/E has taken a tumble along with its share price. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

Our examination of Joy Kie's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
