Investors Still Waiting For A Pull Back In Eventbrite, Inc. (NYSE:EB)

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 26 06:23

When you see that almost half of the companies in the Interactive Media and Services industry in the United States have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.5x, Eventbrite, Inc. (NYSE:EB) looks to be giving off some sell signals with its 2.7x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

How Has Eventbrite Performed Recently?

With revenue growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Eventbrite has been doing relatively well. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?

Eventbrite's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 24% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 91% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 19% per annum during the coming three years according to the seven analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 11% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why Eventbrite is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

The Bottom Line On Eventbrite's P/S

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Eventbrite maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Interactive Media and Services industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
