Newcapec Electronics' (SZSE:300248) Five-year Total Shareholder Returns Outpace the Underlying Earnings Growth

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 25 00:39

While Newcapec Electronics Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300248) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 16% in the last quarter. But at least the stock is up over the last five years. In that time, it is up 16%, which isn't bad, but is below the market return of 33%.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 9.8%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During five years of share price growth, Newcapec Electronics achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 7.1% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 3% average annual increase in the share price. So it seems the market isn't so enthusiastic about the stock these days.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Newcapec Electronics' TSR for the last 5 years was 20%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

Although it hurts that Newcapec Electronics returned a loss of 14% in the last twelve months, the broader market was actually worse, returning a loss of 20%. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 4%, each year, over five years. It could be that the business is just facing some short term problems, but shareholders should keep a close eye on the fundamentals. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Newcapec Electronics better, we need to consider many other factors.
