Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Technology, Industrials and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.54%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.88%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.35%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 4.20% or 8.53 points to trade at 211.59 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 3.26% or 5.95 points to end at 188.63 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) was up 2.06% or 1.86 points to 92.20 in late trade.
Biggest losers included UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH), which lost 1.62% or 8.53 points to trade at 516.41 in late trade. Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) declined 0.90% or 1.29 points to end at 141.83 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 0.66% or 1.20 points to 179.80.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Fastenal Company (NASDAQ:FAST) which rose 7.18% to 67.93, American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:AAL) which was up 6.88% to settle at 13.82 and Southwest Airlines Company (NYSE:LUV) which gained 6.79% to close at 30.02.
The worst performers were Discover Financial Services (NYSE:DFS) which was down 10.80% to 97.00 in late trade, Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which lost 7.99% to settle at 411.97 and KeyCorp (NYSE:KEY) which was down 4.62% to 13.20 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Celularity Inc (NASDAQ:CELU) which rose 53.48% to 0.29, Phunware Inc (NASDAQ:PHUN) which was up 48.89% to settle at 0.24 and Nvni Group Ltd (NASDAQ:NVNI) which gained 45.95% to close at 2.70.
The worst performers were Transcode Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:RNAZ) which was down 49.54% to 1.09 in late trade, Aravive Inc (NASDAQ:ARAV) which lost 46.06% to settle at 0.06 and ProMIS Neurosciences Inc (NASDAQ:PMN) which was down 32.56% to 1.74 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1604 to 1272 and 62 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1716 rose and 1694 declined, while 114 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.46% to 14.13.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.92% or 18.45 to $2,024.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 2.01% or 1.46 to hit $73.94 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 1.53% or 1.19 to trade at $79.07 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.06% to 1.09, while USD/JPY fell 0.02% to 148.12.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.02% at 103.19.
