A Piece Of The Puzzle Missing From Photronics, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PLAB) 42% Share Price Climb

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 9 14:48

Photronics, Inc. (NASDAQ:PLAB) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 42% share price jump in the last month. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 65% in the last year.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Photronics may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 14.8x, since almost half of all companies in the United States have P/E ratios greater than 17x and even P/E's higher than 32x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

Photronics certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company's earnings are going to fall away like everyone else's soon. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

Photronics' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 4.6% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 284% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 12% during the coming year according to the one analyst following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 9.9%, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Photronics' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

What We Can Learn From Photronics' P/E?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Photronics' P/E close to the market median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Photronics' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing significant pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
