Edgewell Personal Care (NYSE:EPC) Shareholders Have Endured a 9.4% Loss From Investing in the Stock a Year Ago

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 6 08:53

It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. Unfortunately the Edgewell Personal Care Company (NYSE:EPC) share price slid 11% over twelve months. That contrasts poorly with the market return of 22%. On the other hand, the stock is actually up 2.7% over three years.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Even though the Edgewell Personal Care share price is down over the year, its EPS actually improved. It could be that the share price was previously over-hyped.

It's surprising to see the share price fall so much, despite the improved EPS. So it's easy to justify a look at some other metrics.

Given the yield is quite low, at 1.7%, we doubt the dividend can shed much light on the share price. Edgewell Personal Care managed to grow revenue over the last year, which is usually a real positive. Since the fundamental metrics don't readily explain the share price drop, there might be an opportunity if the market has overreacted.

A Different Perspective

Edgewell Personal Care shareholders are down 9.4% for the year (even including dividends), but the market itself is up 22%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 0.7% per year over five years. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Edgewell Personal Care (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
