It is hard to get excited after looking at Darbond Technology's (SHSE:688035) recent performance, when its stock has declined 6.8% over the past month. However, the company's fundamentals look pretty decent, and long-term financials are usually aligned with future market price movements. How Do You Calculate Return On Equity?

The formula for ROE is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Darbond Technology is:

5.4% = CN¥122m ÷ CN¥2.3b (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).

The 'return' is the yearly profit. That means that for every CN¥1 worth of shareholders' equity, the company generated CN¥0.05 in profit.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?

So far, we've learned that ROE is a measure of a company's profitability. Based on how much of its profits the company chooses to reinvest or "retain", we are then able to evaluate a company's future ability to generate profits. Assuming everything else remains unchanged, the higher the ROE and profit retention, the higher the growth rate of a company compared to companies that don't necessarily bear these characteristics.

Darbond Technology's Earnings Growth And 5.4% ROE

On the face of it, Darbond Technology's ROE is not much to talk about. A quick further study shows that the company's ROE doesn't compare favorably to the industry average of 6.8% either. Despite this, surprisingly, Darbond Technology saw an exceptional 33% net income growth over the past five years. So, there might be other aspects that are positively influencing the company's earnings growth. Such as - high earnings retention or an efficient management in place.

We then compared Darbond Technology's net income growth with the industry and we're pleased to see that the company's growth figure is higher when compared with the industry which has a growth rate of 12% in the same 5-year period.

Is Darbond Technology Making Efficient Use Of Its Profits?

The three-year median payout ratio for Darbond Technology is 30%, which is moderately low. The company is retaining the remaining 70%.
