Investors Appear Satisfied With International Genius Company's (HKG:33) Prospects As Shares Rocket 29%

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 29, 2023 17:28

International Genius Company (HKG:33) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 29% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. This latest share price bounce rounds out a remarkable 315% gain over the last twelve months.

Following the firm bounce in price, when almost half of the companies in Hong Kong's Retail Distributors industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.6x, you may consider International Genius as a stock not worth researching with its 11.2x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How International Genius Has Been Performing

International Genius has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting this decent revenue performance to beat out the industry over the near term, which has kept the P/S propped up. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on International Genius' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The High P/S Ratio?

International Genius' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 13%. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 287% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 18% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

With this in consideration, it's not hard to understand why International Genius' P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Presumably shareholders aren't keen to offload something they believe will continue to outmanoeuvre the wider industry.

What Does International Genius' P/S Mean For Investors?

The strong share price surge has lead to International Genius' P/S soaring as well. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that International Genius maintains its high P/S on the strength of its recent three-year growth being higher than the wider industry forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential continued revenue growth in the future is great enough to warrant an inflated P/S. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with International Genius, and understanding should be part of your investment process.
