Insiders At Kirby Sold US$3.8m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 29, 2023 05:09

The fact that multiple Kirby Corporation (NYSE:KEX) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Kirby

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the President of Kirby Inland Marine LP, Christian O'Neil, for US$632k worth of shares, at about US$73.02 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$78.96, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 29% of Christian O'Neil's holding.

Over the last year we saw more insider selling of Kirby shares, than buying. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Does Kirby Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 1.1% of Kirby shares, worth about US$51m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
