Simply Wall St ·  Dec 27, 2023 10:20

Quite a few insiders have dramatically grown their holdings in National Vision Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:EYE) over the past 12 months. An insider's optimism about the company's prospects is a positive sign.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At National Vision Holdings

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Chairman David Peeler for US$1.0m worth of shares, at about US$25.73 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$20.76). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Does National Vision Holdings Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 1.7% of National Vision Holdings shares, worth about US$26m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
