Getting In Cheap On ATI Inc. (NYSE:ATI) Is Unlikely

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 25, 2023 06:22

There wouldn't be many who think ATI Inc.'s (NYSE:ATI) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.4x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Metals and Mining industry in the United States is similar at about 1.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does ATI's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

ATI certainly has been doing a good job lately as its revenue growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their revenue go backwards. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to deteriorate like the rest, which has kept the P/S ratio from rising. Those who are bullish on ATI will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a slightly lower valuation.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like ATI's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 15%. Revenue has also lifted 23% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has actually done a good job of growing revenue over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 5.4% per year as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. With the industry predicted to deliver 550% growth each year, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.

In light of this, it's curious that ATI's P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.

The Bottom Line On ATI's P/S

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our look at the analysts forecasts of ATI's revenue prospects has shown that its inferior revenue outlook isn't negatively impacting its P/S as much as we would have predicted. When we see companies with a relatively weaker revenue outlook compared to the industry, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/S lower. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
