Acushnet Holdings Corp. (NYSE:GOLF) Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 24, 2023 07:43

It's not a stretch to say that Acushnet Holdings Corp.'s (NYSE:GOLF) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 18.3x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in the United States, where the median P/E ratio is around 17x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

Acushnet Holdings certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think this strong earnings performance might be about to tail off. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The P/E?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like Acushnet Holdings' is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 39%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 178% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 6.8% over the next year. That's not great when the rest of the market is expected to grow by 10%.

In light of this, it's somewhat alarming that Acushnet Holdings' P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the negative growth outlook.

The Final Word

We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Acushnet Holdings currently trades on a higher than expected P/E for a company whose earnings are forecast to decline. When we see a poor outlook with earnings heading backwards, we suspect share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/E lower. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
