Little Excitement Around XD Inc.'s (HKG:2400) Revenues As Shares Take 36% Pounding

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 22, 2023 20:09

XD Inc. (HKG:2400) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 36% share price drop in the last month. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 56% loss during that time.

After such a large drop in price, XD may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x, since almost half of all companies in the Entertainment industry in Hong Kong have P/S ratios greater than 1.7x and even P/S higher than 4x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

How XD Has Been Performing

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, XD has been relatively sluggish. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, XD would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 23%. Revenue has also lifted 21% in aggregate from three years ago, mostly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been respectable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 19% as estimated by the eleven analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 45%, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that XD's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On XD's P/S

XD's recently weak share price has pulled its P/S back below other Entertainment companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

As we suspected, our examination of XD's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. The company will need a change of fortune to justify the P/S rising higher in the future.

The company's balance sheet is another key area for risk analysis. You can assess many of the main risks through our free balance sheet analysis for XD with six simple checks.
