Insiders At PriceSmart Sold US$6.8m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 18, 2023 09:05

Many PriceSmart, Inc. (NASDAQ:PSMT) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

PriceSmart Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Director, Sherry Bahrambeygui, for US$2.3m worth of shares, at about US$77.77 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$74.21. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

PriceSmart Insiders Are Selling The Stock

The last quarter saw substantial insider selling of PriceSmart shares. In total, Independent Director Edgar Zurcher sold US$150k worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. In light of this it's hard to argue that all the insiders think that the shares are a bargain.

Does PriceSmart Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. PriceSmart insiders own about US$195m worth of shares (which is 8.8% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
