Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In Assured Guaranty

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 10, 2023 07:24

We wouldn't blame Assured Guaranty Ltd. (NYSE:AGO) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Dominic Frederico, the Deputy Chairman recently netted about US$2.1m selling shares at an average price of US$68.50. However, that sale only accounted for 2.0% of their holding, so arguably it doesn't say much about their conviction.

Assured Guaranty Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent sale by Deputy Chairman Dominic Frederico was not the only time they sold Assured Guaranty shares this year. They previously made an even bigger sale of -US$3.1m worth of shares at a price of US$61.35 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$70.80). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 3.2%of Dominic Frederico's holding.

Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
