Masco Insiders Sold US$2.0m Of Shares Suggesting Hesitancy

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 4, 2023 09:29

Over the past year, many Masco Corporation (NYSE:MAS) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Masco

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the VP & Chief Human Resource Officer, Renee Straber, for US$952k worth of shares, at about US$61.11 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even slightly below the current price of US$62.16. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 33% of Renee Straber's stake.

Insider Ownership Of Masco

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Insiders own 0.4% of Masco shares, worth about US$57m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Masco Insiders?
