Insiders At Eversource Energy Sold US$1.2m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 3, 2023 09:57

The fact that multiple Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Eversource Energy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Executive VP & General Counsel, Gregory Butler, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$964k worth of shares at a price of US$64.25 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$60.78. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Eversource Energy insiders own about US$46m worth of shares. That equates to 0.2% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
