Insiders At Landstar System Sold US$7.8m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 14, 2023 09:11

In the last year, many Landstar System, Inc. (NASDAQ:LSTR) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Landstar System

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President, James Gattoni, sold US$4.0m worth of shares at a price of US$176 per share. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of US$168. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Landstar System insiders own about US$55m worth of shares. That equates to 0.9% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
