VTEX (NYSE:VTEX) Stocks Shoot Up 32% But Its P/S Still Looks Reasonable

Simply Wall St ·  Nov 10, 2023 05:18

VTEX (NYSE:VTEX) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 32% after a shaky period beforehand. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 70%.

Since its price has surged higher, given around half the companies in the United States' Interactive Media and Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.4x, you may consider VTEX as a stock to avoid entirely with its 6.4x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How VTEX Has Been Performing

Recent times have been advantageous for VTEX as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. The P/S is probably high because investors think this strong revenue performance will continue. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think VTEX's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For VTEX?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as VTEX's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 25%. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 89% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 24% during the coming year according to the nine analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 13% growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's understandable that VTEX's P/S sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What Does VTEX's P/S Mean For Investors?

The strong share price surge has lead to VTEX's P/S soaring as well. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that VTEX maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Interactive Media and Services industry, as expected. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
