As Urovo Technology (SZSE:300531) Rallies 10% This Past Week, Investors May Now Be Noticing the Company's Three-year Earnings Growth

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 30, 2023 20:54

This week we saw the Urovo Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300531) share price climb by 10%. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been less than pleasing. After all, the share price is down 20% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, Urovo Technology actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 35% per year. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

With a rather small yield of just 0.3% we doubt that the stock's share price is based on its dividend. Revenue is actually up 11% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching Urovo Technology more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

We know that Urovo Technology has improved its bottom line over the last three years, but what does the future have in store? It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on how its financial position has changed over time.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Urovo Technology shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 7.0% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Notably the five-year annualised TSR loss of 1.6% per year compares very unfavourably with the recent share price performance. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. Is Urovo Technology cheap compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.
