Possible Bearish Signals With Prudential Financial Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 30, 2023 11:19

The fact that multiple Prudential Financial, Inc. (NYSE:PRU) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Prudential Financial Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP and Head of International Businesses & PGIM, Andrew Sullivan, for US$1.2m worth of shares, at about US$101 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$88.61). So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Insider Ownership Of Prudential Financial

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Prudential Financial insiders own about US$56m worth of shares. That equates to 0.2% of the company. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Do The Prudential Financial Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Prudential Financial shares in the last quarter. Still, the insider transactions at Prudential Financial in the last 12 months are not very heartening. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
