Looking at Dorman Products, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:DORM ) insider transactions over the last year, we can see that insiders were net sellers. That is, there were more number of shares sold by insiders than there were purchased.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Dorman Products Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Independent Director, John Gavin, sold US$269k worth of shares at a price of US$84.69 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of US$73.20. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels. John Gavin was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 1.49k shares worth US$122k. But they sold 3.18k shares for US$269k. Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Dorman Products insiders own about US$377m worth of shares (which is 16% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Dorman Products Insiders?

The fact that there have been no Dorman Products insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. While we feel good about high insider ownership of Dorman Products, we can't say the same about the selling of shares. While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. For example, Dorman Products has 2 warning signs (and 1 which can't be ignored) we think you should know about.
