Investors in Tongdao Liepin Group (HKG:6100) From Five Years Ago Are Still Down 69%, Even After 13% Gain This Past Week

It's nice to see the Tongdao Liepin Group (HKG:6100) share price up 13% in a week. But that can't change the reality that over the longer term (five years), the returns have been really quite dismal. In that time the share price has delivered a rude shock to holders, who find themselves down 69% after a long stretch. So we're not so sure if the recent bounce should be celebrated. Of course, this could be the start of a turnaround.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last five years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

In the last half decade Tongdao Liepin Group saw its share price fall as its EPS declined below zero. Since the company has fallen to a loss making position, it's hard to compare the change in EPS with the share price change. But we would generally expect a lower price, given the situation.
