Dolby Laboratories' (NYSE:DLB) 31% Return Outpaced the Company's Earnings Growth Over the Same One-year Period

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 11, 2023 10:07

These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. To wit, the Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE:DLB) share price is 29% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around 19% (not including dividends) in the same period. So that should have shareholders smiling. However, the stock hasn't done so well in the longer term, with the stock only up 14% in three years.

Since it's been a strong week for Dolby Laboratories shareholders, let's have a look at trend of the longer term fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Dolby Laboratories was able to grow EPS by 15% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 29% increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Dolby Laboratories shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 31% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 4%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity.
