Investors in Blackbaud (NASDAQ:BLKB) Have Seen Favorable Returns of 35% Over the Past Year

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 11, 2023 09:00

The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. For example, the Blackbaud, Inc. (NASDAQ:BLKB) share price is up 35% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 19% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Having said that, the longer term returns aren't so impressive, with stock gaining just 21% in three years.

Now it's worth having a look at the company's fundamentals too, because that will help us determine if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the last year, Blackbaud actually saw its earnings per share drop 185%. We do note that there were extraordinary items impacting the result.

So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Indeed, when EPS is declining but the share price is up, it often means the market is considering other factors.

However the year on year revenue growth of 6.8% would help. Many businesses do go through a phase where they have to forgo some profits to drive business development, and sometimes its for the best.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Blackbaud has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 35% in the last twelve months. That certainly beats the loss of about 1.0% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Blackbaud better, we need to consider many other factors. For example, we've discovered 2 warning signs for Blackbaud (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
