As Zheneng Jinjiang Environment Holding (SGX:BWM) jumps 19% this past week, investors may now be noticing the company's three-year earnings growth

Zheneng Jinjiang Environment Holding Company Limited (SGX:BWM) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 19% in the last week. But that cannot eclipse the less-than-impressive returns over the last three years. Truth be told the share price declined 38% in three years and that return, Dear Reader, falls short of what you could have got from passive investing with an index fund.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last three years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Although the share price is down over three years, Zheneng Jinjiang Environment Holding actually managed to grow EPS by 28% per year in that time. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

Revenue is actually up 5.8% over the three years, so the share price drop doesn't seem to hinge on revenue, either. This analysis is just perfunctory, but it might be worth researching Zheneng Jinjiang Environment Holding more closely, as sometimes stocks fall unfairly. This could present an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

Zheneng Jinjiang Environment Holding shareholders are down 17% for the year, but the market itself is up 5.9%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 6% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Zheneng Jinjiang Environment Holding has 3 warning signs we think you should be aware of.
