AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, Says That AI Is The Most Important Thing For The Next 10 Years, Will Help Make Humans More Productive

Yesterday during the Adobe Summit, the CEO of the company, Shantanu Narayen, sat down with AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su to hear her thoughts on AI. According to Dr. Lisa Su, AI is just as important for AMD as for any other company, & it can be leveraged to make businesses productive & provide more advantages.

When I think about AI, I think about it in two pieces, one is the AI that's under the covers which is the data analytics, how do we become smarter with all of this.. tons of data that is being generated and how do we make most use of it but I think the piece that has unlocked potential and I know you guys have talked about it here in the last day or two as well, you know the generative AI concept of actually sort of have your little personal assistant or your co-pilot and helping you solve whatever your problem set is. I mean that is just incredibly powerful.

Now the technology that we are doing around it is training these incredibly large data sets and then allowing people to access that data set. You need an incredible amount of computing power, tens of thousands of GPUs and CPUs but that capability just unlocks new things and when I think about, even my dad is talking about ChatGPT, everywhere you go it's like what can you do with that. I think it's capturing people's imaginations and the key is, how are we going to use it for business advantages? How are, each of us, going to use this advantage to make us a bit more productive?

I think we were talking a bit about its so early. I mean you (Adobe) are in BETA phase, there's a lot of work to really see how AI can unlock the power but you can see how it can make us 50% more productive or 80% more productive and think about how we can use those cycles now to do so many other things.

AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su (Adobe Summit 2023)

Dr. Lisa Su followed up by stating that they are making chips that incorporate over 100 Billion transistors while taking around 3 years to make from scratch. AI can be an essential tool and if that can help them either cut the time in half or provide 100% assurance that the chip will work on day one, they will take it.

NVIDIA, partnered with TSMC, ASML, and Synopsys, recently announced its cuLitho technology at GTC 2023 which would help accelerate chip manufacturing by 40 times. The technology leverages NVIDIA's very own DGX H100 GPUs which have loads of computational and AI power to streamline the chip development process.

Not just that, NVIDIA has already stated that it is utilizing AI and Machine Learning from its own GPU to help create its next-gen chips. The company has also been at the forefront of the whole revolution of AI and ChatGPT with several thousands of its GPUs powering OpenAI servers. The CEO of NVIDIA, Jensen Huang, has called ChatGPT as the greatest thing ever done for computing.

So your second question is, what has it not done? I think we are just at the very beginning. For my team, we build chips that are, our largest chip now is like a 100 billion transistor and it takes us around three years from start to finish. Now if I can cut that in half or I can make it so that it is right on day one, that's just tremendous business value. So all of us are learning together, it's a complete race. This is the one place I see everyone kind of leaning forward and leaning in to experiment.

My view of the world is that is not a replacement. You know the creative genius of everyone in this room can be a little bit faster, a little bit better, a little bit more capable, we are not talking about replacement but we are really talking about augmentation and productivity so it is going to be a fascinating era over the next 10 years.

AMD CEO, Dr. Lisa Su (Adobe Summit 2023)

In the end, Dr. Lisa Su was asked to describe AI with just one sentence and her response was simply, "The Most Important Thing of The Next 10 Years". AMD has a lot of hardware in the works that will be put in next-gen data centers and servers. They are powering the world's first and only exascale supercomputer and more are on the way. With chips like the upcoming Instinct MI300 & the next-gen EPYC CPUs, AMD can prove that it too is a big player in the upcoming era of AI tech.
