MarineMax's (NYSE:HZO) Underlying Earnings Growth Outpaced the Decent Return Generated for Shareholders Over the Past Three Years

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 31, 2023 06:40

MarineMax, Inc. (NYSE:HZO) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 12% in the last week. But that shouldn't obscure the pleasing returns achieved by shareholders over the last three years. After all, the share price is up a market-beating 49% in that time.

Although MarineMax has shed US$90m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During three years of share price growth, MarineMax achieved compound earnings per share growth of 66% per year. The average annual share price increase of 14% is actually lower than the EPS growth. Therefore, it seems the market has moderated its expectations for growth, somewhat. We'd venture the lowish P/E ratio of 3.57 also reflects the negative sentiment around the stock.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that MarineMax shareholders are down 38% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 12%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 7% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
