For the full year 2022, China's NEV sales were 6.887 million units, up 93.4 percent year-on-year, accounting for 25.6 percent of all vehicle sales.

China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales reached a record high in December, although NEV penetration declined slightly from November due to significant growth in conventional fuel vehicle sales.

China's December NEV sales rose 51.8 percent year-on-year to 814,000 units, surpassing November's 786,000 units and once again setting a new record high, according to data released today by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

The CAAM figures are wholesale sales for automakers, where NEVs include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles.

BEV sales in China in December were 624,000 units, up 37.7 percent year-on-year; PHEV sales were 189,000 units, up 129.2 percent year-on-year; and fuel cell vehicle sales were 1,000 units, up 24.9 percent year-on-year, according to the CAAM.

China's December sales of all vehicles were 2.556 million, down 8.4 percent year-on-year but up 9.7 percent from November.

This means that the penetration of NEVs in China was 31.8 percent in December, down 2 percentage points from the record high of 33.8 percent in November.

For the full year 2022, China's NEV sales were 6.887 million units, up 93.4 percent year-on-year and accounting for 25.6 percent of all vehicle sales, according to the CAAM.

Among them, BEV sales were 5.365 million units, up 81.6 percent year-on-year; PHEV sales were 1.518 million units, up 151.6 percent year-on-year; and fuel cell sales were 3,000 units, up 112.8 percent year-on-year.

Total vehicle sales in China in 2022 were 26.864 million units, up 2.1 percent year-on-year, the CAAM report said, adding that they expect China's vehicle sales to grow by about 3 percent year-on-year in 2023.

In December, 324,000 vehicles were exported from China, up 45.4 percent from a year earlier, but down 1.9 percent from November.

Among them, 82,000 NEVs were exported in December, up 3.6 times year-on-year but down 14.2 percent from November.

For the full year 2022, more than 3 million vehicles were exported from China, reaching 3.111 million units, up 54.4 percent year-on-year, according to the CAAM.

The export of NEVs in 2022 was 679,000 units, an increase of 120 percent year-on-year.
