Despite Delivering Investors Losses of 20% Over the Past 5 Years, Sally Beauty Holdings (NYSE:SBH) Has Been Growing Its Earnings

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 8, 2023 07:25

Sally Beauty Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:SBH) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 29% in the last month. But if you look at the last five years the returns have not been good. In fact, the share price is down 20%, which falls well short of the return you could get by buying an index fund.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last five years, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the unfortunate half decade during which the share price slipped, Sally Beauty Holdings actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 1.9% per year. So it doesn't seem like EPS is a great guide to understanding how the market is valuing the stock. Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past.

Given that EPS has increased, but the share price has fallen, it's fair to say that market sentiment around the stock has become more negative. That said, if EPS continues to increase, it seems very likely the share price will get a boost, in the long term.

A Different Perspective

The total return of 19% received by Sally Beauty Holdings shareholders over the last year isn't far from the market return of -18%. Unfortunately, last year's performance is a deterioration of an already poor long term track record, given the loss of 4% per year over the last five years. Weak performance over the long term usually destroys market confidence in a stock, but bargain hunters may want to take a closer look for signs of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Sally Beauty Holdings better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance.
