Insiders Who Sold A10 Networks, Inc.'s (NYSE:ATEN) Earlier This Year Didn't Have to Weather This Week's 7.6% Slide

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 6, 2023 07:30

Despite the fact that A10 Networks, Inc.'s (NYSE:ATEN) value has dropped 7.6% in the last week insiders who sold US$6.1m worth of stock in the past 12 months have had less success. Insiders would probably have been better off holding on to their shares given that the average selling price of US$15.07 is still lower than the current share price.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

A10 Networks Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Lead Independent Director, Eric Singer, sold US$2.7m worth of shares at a price of US$15.09 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at below the current price (US$15.36). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was 71% of Eric Singer's holding.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that A10 Networks insiders own 1.6% of the company, worth about US$18m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
