Teradata Corporation (NYSE:TDC) Insiders Sold US$2.6m Worth of Stock Suggesting Impending Weakness.

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 26, 2022 14:45

The fact that multiple Teradata Corporation (NYSE:TDC) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Teradata

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Chief Human Resources Officer, Kathleen Cullen-Cote, for US$1.1m worth of shares, at about US$49.29 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$30.65). So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Insider Ownership Of Teradata

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Teradata insiders own 1.4% of the company, worth about US$45m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Do The Teradata Insider Transactions Indicate?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Teradata shares in the last quarter. Still, the insider transactions at Teradata in the last 12 months are not very heartening.
