Further Weakness as Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) Drops 9.5% This Week, Taking Five-year Losses to 87%

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 26, 2022 14:15

We're definitely into long term investing, but some companies are simply bad investments over any time frame. We don't wish catastrophic capital loss on anyone. Imagine if you held Nektar Therapeutics (NASDAQ:NKTR) for half a decade as the share price tanked 87%. We also note that the stock has performed poorly over the last year, with the share price down 83%. Unfortunately the share price momentum is still quite negative, with prices down 28% in thirty days. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

Given that Nektar Therapeutics didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

Over half a decade Nektar Therapeutics reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 36% for each year. That puts it in an unattractive cohort, to put it mildly. So it's not that strange that the share price dropped 13% per year in that period. We don't think this is a particularly promising picture. Of course, the poor performance could mean the market has been too severe selling down. That can happen.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 22% in the twelve months, Nektar Therapeutics shareholders did even worse, losing 83%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 13% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Nektar Therapeutics better, we need to consider many other factors.
