Simply Wall St ·  Sep 25, 2022 08:45

From what we can see, insiders were net sellers in EMCOR Group, Inc.'s (NYSE:EME ) during the past 12 months. That is, insiders sold the stock in greater numbers than they purchased it.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At EMCOR Group

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, Carol Lowe, for US$203k worth of shares, at about US$103 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$115. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was 100% of Carol Lowe's stake. Carol Lowe was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership Of EMCOR Group

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. EMCOR Group insiders own about US$83m worth of shares. That equates to 1.5% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
