Investors Might Be Losing Patience for Cryoport's (NASDAQ:CYRX) Increasing Losses, as Stock Sheds 14% Over the Past Week

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 23, 2022 09:21

Cryoport, Inc. (NASDAQ:CYRX) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 24% in the last month. But that scarcely detracts from the really solid long term returns generated by the company over five years. In fact, the share price is 172% higher today. So while it's never fun to see a share price fall, it's important to look at a longer time horizon. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for the long term, so spare a thought for those caught in the 61% decline over the last twelve months.

In light of the stock dropping 14% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.

Because Cryoport made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

For the last half decade, Cryoport can boast revenue growth at a rate of 62% per year. Even measured against other revenue-focussed companies, that's a good result. Meanwhile, its share price performance certainly reflects the strong growth, given the share price grew at 22% per year, compound, during the period. So it seems likely that buyers have paid attention to the strong revenue growth. Cryoport seems like a high growth stock - so growth investors might want to add it to their watchlist.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 20% in the twelve months, Cryoport shareholders did even worse, losing 61%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 22%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Cryoport better, we need to consider many other factors.
