As Qiagen N.V.'s (NYSE:QGEN)) Market Cap Dropped by US$688m, Insiders Who Sold US$1.8m Worth of Stock Were Able to Offset Their Losses

Simply Wall St ·  09/20 21:51

Over the past year, insiders sold US$1.8m worth of Qiagen N.V. (NYSE:QGEN) stock at an average price of US$46.82 per share allowing them to get the most out of their money. The company's market valuation decreased by US$688m after the stock price dropped 6.5% over the past week, but insiders were spared from painful losses.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Qiagen

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the CFO, MD & Member of Management Board, Roland Sackers, for US$1.5m worth of shares, at about US$47.00 per share. So what is clear is that an insider saw fit to sell at around the current price of US$43.56. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.

Qiagen insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. The chart below shows insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Does Qiagen Boast High Insider Ownership?

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Qiagen insiders own 0.4% of the company, worth about US$37m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Qiagen Insiders?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Qiagen insiders. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. If you are like me, you may want to think about whether this company will grow or shrink.
