Insiders Who Placed Huge Bets on OPKO Health, Inc. (NASDAQ:OPK) Earlier This Year Would Be Disappointed With the 7.8% Drop

Simply Wall St ·  Sep 5, 2022 07:40

Insiders who acquired US$12m worth of OPKO Health, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:OPK) stock at an average price of US$2.83 in the past 12 months may be dismayed by the recent 7.8% price decline. Insiders invest with the hopes of seeing their money grow in value over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their initial investment is now only worth US$9.4m, which is not what they expected.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

OPKO Health Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Chairman & CEO Phillip Frost for US$2.3m worth of shares, at about US$3.09 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than US$2.13 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. We always take careful note of the price insiders pay when purchasing shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price.

Does OPKO Health Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. OPKO Health insiders own about US$746m worth of shares (which is 45% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At OPKO Health Tell Us?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchases. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. Along with the high insider ownership, this analysis suggests that insiders are quite bullish about OPKO Health. That's what I like to see! While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
