By selling US$852k worth of M/I Homes, Inc. (NYSE:MHO) stock at an average sell price of US$46.58 over the last year, insiders seemed to have made the most of their holdings. The company's market cap plunged by US$118m after price dropped by 9.2% last week but insiders were able to limit their loss to an extent.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At M/I Homes

The Chairman, Robert Schottenstein, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$852k worth of shares at a price of US$46.83 each. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$41.99). So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels. Robert Schottenstein was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership Of M/I Homes

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Insiders own 2.4% of M/I Homes shares, worth about US$28m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
